PostSubject: DOWNLOADING   Sat Nov 08, 2008 7:49 pm

Hi Guys and Gals,
Need a bit of help here.
I'm about to pre-order 09 and would like some info from those of you who have it. Please.
How long does the average beta download take. My broadband can handle 54 MBs per secs, although it has never reached this speed, especially with Auran.
The reason this is important is, as some of you know, my youngest son is serving in Afghanistan, and we have remotely connected my desktop to his laptop. This is because I can take over his laptop to install photographs, leave messages Etc., and he can do likewise. Modern Technology is advancing fast. This isn't through Windows, but another program.
If I can get a rough download time estimate, I can warn him not to connect while the download takes place.
Thanks in advance
Pete.

Hi Pete,

I have a similar connection and it took me two and a half hours, I would recommend allowing up to 3-4 just to make sure....

Hope this helps,

Lorin Cool

Hi Pete,

Are you pre-ordering the dvd or download version?

My good friend, I strongly recmmend you get the dvd version, instead... better to have a cd of it then a download file -- never know if Auran goes belly-up or cancel trainz all together!

It took me 1hr and half .. it download at 800+k -- off peak horus around 3-5am (beta-version)!

Hi Lorin, Ishie,

Thanks friends. All points noted with gratitude.

I could temporarily disconnect the remote link, but we have an agreement, IE, If he's going on an extended patrol for example or I'm going to be otherwise busy, we let each other know in advance. This prevents unnecessary worry on both sides.

Thanks again,
All the best,
Pete.

PS: Ishie, I'm still considering the DVD/Download options, your comments has given my little grey cells room for thought, Cheers

Hey Pete,

Honestly, as face value TR09 does not look any different than TR06 ... My suggestion, my dear friend, get the DVD version... don't be on a rush to jump on it and get the download version -- I have had bad experience with download version myself, I guess that's why I have suggested: you can easily delete it, loose, or it can become corrupted for whatever reason.

If you are building a route you can always install in TR09 when you get it ...

Ish

PS May your son be safe in the battlefield an come home safe when his tour is up ...

Hi Pete.

If you're talking about the beta, the problem with it is that it's not on a very fast server, and seems limited to around 15kb/s

If you use Free Download Manager, you can download multiple streams (limited to 8 by Auran it seems) so you get an average of 120kb/s, which is still slow, but a bit better, but the beta is 2.6gb so it'll take a little while.
It might be quicker now that most people already have it.

If you're talking about the retail download, I imagine they'll put it on a faster server for that.

Smiley.

I also ordered the DVD version, and like others have said I believe this is the best way to go, besides I always like to have something in a box, paper manual, etc.

For some reason I'm always worried about losing downloaded copies and in some cases there is a limit on how many times it can be re-downloaded.

I read somewhere in the forum that it'll start in December ...but with Auran, who knows these days ...

Still, there are a couple of threads about it at the forum, Pete! If I come across them I posted here and drop you a PM as well...

Hey Guys,

Haven't been on here a bit-busy working on my layout and doing it in the snow (last minute decision).

I will definately order the DVD version eventually. You never know when the computer needs to be reformated so a hardcopy is better than fiddling and farting with downloading it.

Best Regards,
Andrew

Hi All,
Like I stated in my previous post, I've decided on the DVD option.
A small point for those who have downloaded, couldn't you burn the program onto a blank DVD.
Just a thought.
Cheers
Pete.

Hi Pete,

Yes you could burn it onto a DVD for safe keeping, no problem!

Some people like me just prefer to have the retail (kind) of package.

I backup lots of things onto DVD, photos, payware, video, etc.
